How To Stay Motivated and Active During The Winter Months

It is the 1st of July, a very cold winter’s day in Sydney. I’m sitting comfortably on the lounge, bundled up and writing this month’s article. The heating has been on since early this morning. I usually prefer not to have the heating on for too long because I find it tiring and it makes me feel sluggish and lacking in energy. However, the last few days have been exceptionally cold. It hasn’t been this cold since 1932, with the lowest recorded temperature in the Sydney metropolitan area dropping to -8 °C.

It is times like these that I think of how fortunate I am to have the luxury of heating and a lounge to be able to sit and wrap myself in a warm blanket.  What are luxuries to us are necessities to others.

Staying Motivated During The Cold Weather

Cold weather can often lead to decreased motivation and a sense of laziness.

So, how do we maintain our motivation and keep ourselves active?

Beyond our work commitments and other responsibilities, what do we do in our leisure time?

How can we use the colder months to create a healthy and uplifting environment?

Don’t Become A Couch Potato

It’s easy to fall into a pattern of sitting around, watching TV,  or spending time on devices without even realising it.

Snacking can become a habit we grow accustomed to, often leading us to choose unhealthy options.

Raise Your Awareness

If you are aware that you become less motivated during the colder months, give it some thought before the winter.

  • Sit somewhere quietly and think about how last winter was.
  • How was it really for you?
  • How did it make you feel?
  • Do you feel you can make some positive changes?
  • What can you change?
  • What can you plan?

Set The Scene. Set Your Compass.  What you Think About You Will Create

Your mind is incredibly clever.  Subconsciously, you have the power to create the life you desire or sabotage it.

You can form new neural pathways by engaging in new activities that challenge your brain. Consider learning a new skill, or pick up a new language.  Regularly, practising these activities helps to strengthen the new pathways, making it easier to perform the new task or adopt the new mindset.

  • When making the changes, how will it make you feel?
  • Make a list of the benefits.
  • Commit with your family, partner, roommate or a friend.
  • Having an accountability buddy will help you remain committed.

Explore, Experiment, Connect and Have Fun

Use the winter months to:

  • Explore new activities
  • Experiment with new recipes
  • Play games
  • Have quality conversations with your loved ones and friends, including phone chats and incorporate some fun activities.
  • If you usually exercise outdoors, keep the momentum going by finding indoor activities to engage in.

You Have The Power

I can give you 100 ideas and tips, and you can find 200 excuses not to make the changes.

You can have the tools, but they are useless if not applied.
